Academy Courses

The courses in the Rotary Leadership Academy are designed to correlate with the Rotary recommended Club Leadership Plan and The Rotary Foundations Future Vision Plan. The courses in the Rotary Leadership Academy are as follows:

Course 1:  Communications  (August)

Course #1 will prepare participants to effectively use Electronic Communications for the entire Leadership Academy program.  This course is the Academy "Admissions Course".  Students must successfully complete all components of this course including the Final Exam for full admission to the Leadership Academy program.  The course includes a history of Rotary on the Internet and how electronic communications has impacted the manner in which Rotary now does business; use of  the RI Member Access portal; use of the RI web site; Rotary's use of Social Media; and the student's ability to successfully search the RI web site to obtain valuable Rotary information; and use of the Academy Google Group.  The course includes a "Web Challenge", topics for discussion on the Academy Google Group, a written assignment, and a Final Exam.  This course must be completed by August 31, 2011 (including the Final Exam) in order to be admitted to the full Academy Program.

Course 2:  New Generations  (September)
Course #2 was added to the Academy program in 2011.  This new Fifth Avenue of Service course will cover all four components of New Generations:  RYLA, Youth Exchange, Interact and Rotaract.  It will focus on the role that New Generations does and will continue to play in Rotary and its future including developing future leaders and Rotary's mission to bring peace to the world.  The course is broad based and will also include RI's abuse and harassment policies.  There is a written assignment for this course as well as Google Group discussion topics and a final exam.

Course 3:  Membership  (October)

Course #3 will provide participants with in depth instruction in Rotary International's membership initiative.  The curriculum will include all of the latest material provided by Rotary International as well as numerous additional resources that will assist students in formulating plans and ideas for assisting clubs with membership development and retention.  There is a written assignment for this course as well as Google Group discussion topics and a final exam.

Course 4:  Club, District & RI Organization  (November)

Course 4 will focus on the 2010 Manual of Procedure and Rotary organization at the club, district and international level.  Due to the amount of material required for this course, the course covers six weeks rather than one month.  There is a written assignment for this course as well as Google Group discussion topics and a final exam.

Course 5:  Public Relations for Effective Rotary Clubs (January)

Course #4 will give Academy participants a thorough exploration of public relations and how it can be used to develop effective Rotary clubs.  It includes Rotary's Public Image campaign, including the "Humanity in Motion" series of materials.  There is a written assignment for this course as well as Google Group discussion topics and a final exam.

Course 6:  TRF - Future Vision - Part I  (February)

This is the first of two courses focusing on the TRF Future Vision plan.  As this course is being completely redesigned and rewritten this year, content for this component has not yet been determined.  Currently, it is anticipated that this course will focus on Club Certification and the District Block Grant.  (NOTE:   This description will be updated as the time for teaching both courses draws near).  There is a written assignment for this course as well as Google Group discussion topics and a final exam.

Course 7:  TRF - Future Vision - Part II  (March)

Course #7 is the second of two courses focusing on the TRF Future Vision plan.  As this course is being completely redesigned and rewritten this year, content for this component has not yet been determined.  Currently, it is anticipated that this course will focus on Global Grants.  (NOTE:   This description will be updated as the time for teaching both courses draws near).  There is a written assignment for this course as well as Google Group discussion topics and a final exam.

Final Essay (April)

The final assignment in the Rotary Leadership Academy will be for each participant to select a "mentor" from among the six instructors and then select a topic (approved by the Academy dean) based on one of the six Academy courses.  Essays are to offer ideas for growth, change, improvement in the area of their essay or submit an example of how a particular club or committee took on a challenge and then resolved it.  All essays will be posted on the Academy web site following Graduation.
